General Charter Information
When you book a Northern Territory fishing charter with Island Explorer fishing charters you will be fishing remote and untouched parts of the Northern Territory.
As your skipper (Mal Reid) is also the owner, an Island Explorer Charter is able to be customised to suit your needs. With Mal on board this also gives you the opportunity to vary itineraries even whilst you are out on charter.
eg. you have had your fix of getting your arms streched by Black Jew fish! OK we will change plan tommorow and throw lures for Barramundi.
When fishing with island Explorer Charters you can choose to spend your time Barramundi fishing and Threadfin Salmon fishing in the estuaries, bait fishing for Golden Snapper & Black Few Fish on the reefs and targetting pelagics on the bluewater. Why not get a real taste of Northern Territory fishing and combine them all in the one trip.
River & Estuary Fishing
Island Explorer charters can get you away from the crowds to fish some of the Top Ends remote seldom fished river & estuarine systems.
Our main target when fishing these locations is the famous Australian sportfish, the Barramundi, or Barra for short. Whilst the Barra is the fish most of our clients wish to target you will come across a wide range of other species whilst estuary & river fishing. Species such as GT's (Giant Trevally), Mangrove Jacks, Threadfin Salmon, Blue Salmon, Bream, Golden Snapper, cod and Jew Fish to name a few.
Fishing the rivers and estuary's is predominately lure fishing, either casting to the gutters and snags or trawling is also productive.
Fishing The Run Off
The Runoff is undoubtedly the best time of the year to get into some serious Barramundi Fishing.
Occurring at the end of the wet season when the water on the flood plains start receding. With this receding water comes all sorts of Barra sweets, frog’s tadpoles, small fish etc. The Barramundi congregate at these run off locations for what is probably the easiest feed they are going to get all year. This good news for Barra is also good news for the fisherman.
With Island Explorer you can fish some of the more well known Barra fishing locations such as the Mary River or getaway from the crowds to one of our favorite remote locations.
Reef Fishing
The Northern Territory coast line is littered with islands and reefs. From either the dinghies or the mothership, fishing these reefs can produce some explosive, arm stretching, back breaking fishing.
Tackling a big Black Jew Fish or an over size Golden Snapper will put both gear and angler to the test. GT's, Sharks, Mackerel, Red Emperor and big Cod are just some of the other species you may tangle with.
Make sure you spend some time fishing the reefs when you are next out on Island Explorer.
Fly Fishing
The Northern Territory's reputation as a top class saltwater fly fishing destination is one that now becoming known world wide.
Fishing the rivers and estuary with fly can be very productive, a fly fisher is able to get his flies to places that a lure can rarely be cast. The only problem the fisher is then faces with is getting the fish out of this tight situation.
When Fly Fishing the Northern Territory you can target Barra, GT's (Giant Trevally), Golden Snapper, Bream & Threadfin Salmon to name a few.
